bus shelter project

Bus shelter project.

Extract from my report compiled for Unit 17 task 2:
“But then again, one may argue?  Should the whole project blend in with the surroundings?  Would a new design be detrimental to the cultural preservation and history artifacts that surround the site? Should we consider the material found around the space provided for the building of the new bus terminus?

The bronze predominating fountain in Valletta may be of inspiration both to the concept idea of the design process but may also be used as an additional plus element to the whole project?
These factors are to be taken into consideration.  It may be costly, it may shift the design process from a modern futuristic design that reflect the times to a more classical one but one never knows… it might offer the solution to having a more harmonic balance between structure and environment. “

Designers may argue whether to take the spirit of place as a starting point or whether design should be based on the context.  Although we have come to era where the parametric ontology is our leading force as well as a leading source of inspiration, I still have this urge to connect the whole project with the spirit of the place.

I find that it entails more courage and competence to come up with a feasible but interesting solution that would actually blend harmoniously with the environment and yet be constructed to reflect the time.

What will definitively remain a landmark on this site is the bronze fountain with its three fish tailed tritons.

Consequently, I have decided that this would be my starting point such that the theme for the whole project has been directed to the cell formation of the water bubble.

Some of my early sketches follows the simple line formation of the cell structure of the bubble:

At this point my research was concentration to similar projects around the world including ‘Toyo Ito’ and  ‘the Aquatic Centre’.

The Japanese architect Toyo Ito has won this year’s Royal Gold Medal.

Ito is known for his aesthetic of lightweight, permeable membranes composed of fabrics, perforated aluminium panels and expanded metal sheets, resulting in projects such as Tower of Winds (1986), Restaurant Nomad (1986) and Yatsushiro Municipal Museum (1991).

My next step is to create a modular construction that would shelter people from all weather conditions, and which would incorporate moulded wood for most of its seating. The outer shell would probably consist of other different types of material one of which would most probably be glass.

The bus shelter to be constructed is not intended to be a complex one but would offer interesting combinations when many are put together.

Last but not least ‘bronze’ may be considered as a decorative material to be incorporated into the design but may also be eliminated altogether depending on how the project evolves.
